The UK’s largest oral health awareness campaign, organised by The British Dental Health Foundation took place between May 16th and June 16th this year. National Smile Month has highlighted emerging evidence showing a connection between gum disease and more serious medical conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
CIGNA’s head of product management, Kirsty Jagielko says:
"Most people suffer from some form of gum disease so these research findings could have widespread consequences for our nations’ health. Preventative treatment is vital in slowing gum disease development. But at a time when it’s becoming increasingly difficult to source affordable dentistry, regular check ups and hygiene visits are sometimes neglected.
A comprehensive dental plan can help encourage employees to access the important preventative dental care they need. This will help detect and prevent longer term problems from occurring. The great news for employers is that this affordable and highly valued benefit can help prevent future sickness absence and may even help keep medical plan premiums down."
