CIGNA HealthCare UK enhances cancer cover

CIGNA HealthCare will now cover active treatment for primary cancer to include first line metastases (secondary cancers) which were previously excluded as chronic conditions. Ann Dougan, CIGNA’s marketing director says:

“In line with the latest thinking on cancer treatment from organisations such as Cancerbackup and the Association of British Insurers, we believe that the “traditional” definitions of chronic and acute are no longer suitable.

By enhancing our cover and applying active, supportive and symptomatic definitions to our cancer treatments, we are providing not only a choice but clear and consistent information for our clients and intermediaries alike.”

CIGNA is also covering an extended list of evidence based cancer treatments which are not all available on the NHS. Developed by the CIGNA oncology advisory panel, this list will be regularly updated and reviewed to incorporate the latest drug developments.

Dougan continued:

“Basically, we felt that we needed to undertake a comprehensive review of our cancer cover – this included adopting best practice definitions, providing client choice and covering evidence based treatments. People are living with cancer and leading active and productive lives – this is being recognised and healthcare benefits should reflect this.”

The new CIGNA Oncology ProgrammE (COPE) will also entitle all members to confidential access to clinical advice and support from experienced “Care Specialist” nurses.
